Film on the Rocks

Last night Sam and I enjoyed another of Denver's endless forms of family entertainment. We went to the Red Rocks amphitheater, a huge outside theater right smack dab in the middle of the giant red rocks. The drive was so beautiful with the green mountains looming nearer, then all of a sudden the mountains were red! It reminded me of Grand Junction and was such a pretty little drive!

A lot of events are held here during the summer, including Film on the Rocks. Every other Monday they play a movie on the giant screen and tons of people come to watch! The movie that played last night was "ET." A movie that I hadn't seen for years! What a classic! I had vague memories of watching it when I was young at my grandma and grandpa Davis' house and feeling cool that I got to watch a big kid movie, so apart from being a great movie, it brought back some good memories. It rained for a while before the movie actually started, but it was still really fun. I was pretty impressed that the amphitheater stayed completely full even though rain is generally a setback for these kind of events. I guess in Colorado the weather is just part of the experience.

I saw a lot of people whip out their cameras to take a picture of the screen during the classic "Elliot  and ET riding his bike through the sky in front of the giant moon" part. I wish I would have thought of that, but alas, we just got pictures before the movie started. Anyway, it was a really fun date night and is definitely a place that I would bring my family back to someday in the future.

Summer Update (Mostly in Pictures...)

IN MAY WE...
  • Played in 26 intramural games (Ultimate Frisbee, Kickball, Soccer, and Men's and Women's Softball)
  • Took 9 exams
  • Traveled to Grand Junction and listened to Amazing Emma give her valedictorian speech
  • Went to a BYU Baseball game
  • Traveled to Price for Olivia Powell's baptism
  • Began training for a marathon

We had a blast playing on our different intramural sports teams. Many of the teams were made up of the same people, but this is a picture of our Ultimate Frisbee team.

IN JUNE WE...
  • Ran approximately 60 miles each
  • Moved to Centennial, Colorado
  • Started an Accounting internship with Ernst and Young (Sam)
  • Went to Elitch Gardens
  • Watched the Rockies beat the Padres at Coors Field
  • Watched an AMAZING fireworks show from the Rockies field

Our first amusement park together! Lots of dizzy dizzy roller coasters!

Waiting in line for Disaster Canyon so we could get wet and cool off  in the 100 degree weather!

From our seats in left field

From the field!

IN JULY WE...
  • Started working at Woody Creek Bakery and Cafe (Elise)
  • Watched a lot of Wimbeldon
  • Drove to Idaho for a Groberg Family reunion (also Elise's first time in Idaho)
  • Ran some more
  • Played Chutes and Ladders, Disney Trivia, and Brainquest (Trivia for 1-6 graders)
My first impression of Idaho was most delightful!
The AWESOME cabin that we stayed in for the reunion. There is a giant slide next to those red stairs that goes all the way from the top to the bottom! It was huge!!

Frisbee golf, volleyball, swings, outdoor bowling, hikes, board games, card games, and eating ice cream were among many of the activities that took place.

July has many more memories waiting to be made so maybe you'll hear about them sometime in... September-ish? Or maybe I'll be a better blogger and I'll keep you up to speed in real time. I guess you'll just have to wait to find out! :-)

VICTORY.

Sweet, Sweet, Victory!

Sam and I play on an intramural soccer team. We had a game last night. And as I'm sure you may have surmised based on the title of this blog post, we WON!

There were many things about this game though, that made this victory so sweet.

First of all, let me give you the demographics of our team. My team consists of four girls and six boys. Only two of those ten team members played soccer in high school. None of our girls even knew the rules of the game. Three of our girls wear tennis shoes, not cleats. (You can tell a team might be better than you if all their girls wear cleats...) Regardless of all of these facts that would seemingly hold us back from victory, we did not give up.

Our season stats might also shed some light on why this win was so celebrated. Our record during the regular season was 0-4-1. That means we won ZERO games, we lost FOUR games, and we tied ONE game. That's pretty bad. We were ranked 3rd from last out of all the 170-something teams that signed up. Needless to say, we aren't used to winning. That is, until the tournament began.

Something just fell into place for us during the tournament. On a very small unimportant note, we were placed in the lowest tournament division... But there were still 40-something teams that we had to be better than if we wanted to win. Regardless of our poor record, our team bonded together and began to play the best soccer of our lives. Well, it was the best soccer of my life, but that's not really saying much since I was probably about ten years old the last time I played in a real soccer game with referees and all that jazz.

We won the first three games of the tournament, placing us into the Elite 8. Then came our match up with Team 24, the very victory I wish to tell you about.  We arrived a bit early to warm-up, and our competition looked tough. They were few in numbers, but intimidating nonetheless. We scored the first goal of the game, putting us ahead 1-0 and boosting our confidence. We went back and forth until the score was tied 3-3 in the last few minutes of the game. The buzzer went off, and we knew that the game was about to get more intense in an overtime showdown.

Let me paint a picture for you. We took the field, more determined than ever before. I had the assignment of hanging out by the goal, in ready position to shoot if the ball came near me. That usually gives us the best shooting opportunities, though my and the other girls' inability to always make a clean connection with the ball keeps us from scoring ten goals a game. We started with the ball and lost possession fairly quick. Our opponents lost possession just as quick and the ball was suddenly coming back towards my end of the field. TC was dribbling effortlessly down field, passing any defender that tried to give him trouble, with such finesse! I was open and before I could think the ball was coming toward me. A perfect pass rolling on the grass at just the right speed and angle. I trapped it near the left post, turned, dribbled, swung and made a solid connection with the ball, sending it soaring into the right corner of the goal. I felt as though time had stopped and everything was in slow motion. There was nothing I could do but watch as the ball rolled, barely our of reach of the goalie's grasp.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL! The goal was good and I had just won the game for us. My teammates were surrounding me and my heart was beating out of control. I felt such elation, such euphoria, such exhilaration! Such a feeling of triumph overcame me that I had never experienced before. I submit that scoring a goal in soccer, especially a sudden death, overtime, tournament game-winning goal, is the best feeling that can be sensed in any sport.

So there you have it. Team Jeru Crew is on to the final four. Thank you intramural soccer and especially Team 24 for giving me something to blog about. Our next game is on Saturday, and we're going to bring it!

I felt like Mia Hamm.

Camping in February

We've had the desire to go camping ever since we have been married. Unfortunately we haven't had that opportunity yet, mostly because of the cold winter months. We didn't let that stop us though...

Here is what we did this weekend!

turned our living room into a wildernes...

we forgot to bring our flashlight!

our fire pit...

deliciously perfect S'mores

Who knew camping could be so easy? Okay fine, it wasn't as great as the real thing, but it came pretty darn close and made for a spectacular date night. :-)

Sophie Snow Powell

That's the name we've decided on.  Sophie, because it matches her personality; Snow, because it was snowing the day she was born; and Powell, because she's our little baby.

Actually she's not really so little.  She's is about 61 inches tall and weighs roughly 80 lbs.  Her arms are as long as mine and her hair is stacked up in neat buns on top of her head.  She is such a joy in our lives as we see her big green eyes and bright red smile beaming at us from the back yard.

Oh yeah, we keep her out in the back yard - we just don't have anywhere else for her to sleep.  She doesn't have any legs either, so hopefully it's not too cold for her since she can't really go anywhere to warm herself up.  I guess if she gets too hungry when we're away she can just eat her nose - it's made of a carrot.  For dessert she can eat her mouth - it's made of red fruit loops.  If she's bored she can pull out her eyes and juggle or play tennis.  But don't worry, she'll still look as cute as ever with her rainbow scarf, beanie hat and gloves!  And we will always love her no matter what!

We had a lot of fun building her yesterday and we just wanted to share her with you all so you can see how happy she is to be alive!  We are so proud of Sophie Powell, our little SnowGirl!

2011 Highlights for the Powells

January~ the most intense JENGA game ever, snow forts and snowball fights, Sam has a birthday!

February~ snowboarding, indoor croquet, road-trippin to Arizona (the entire Powell family was reunited after 7 years of at least one boy being on a mission- also I got to meet the whole family!)

March~ Jumping on the Jimmer-mania bandwagon and enjoying some good BYU basketball (we even camped outside the Marriott center for one of their games), the most notable highlight however, didn't have anything to do with Jimmer. Sam and I were engaged in the marvelous month of March !!!

April~ Attending General Conference with the Becksteads, trip to Colorado for Mary's baptism and Easter, stopping at a tiny Stop n Go gas station in Crescent Junction to say goodbye as Sam went to Arizona and I headed back to UT before parting for my summer study abroad in Jerusalem (This was far from being a highlight, but it was kind of a big deal).

May-July~ Elise lived in Jerusalem and met many amazing people (Jews, Palestinians, and BYU students alike), visited many historical and biblical sites, walked the same roads that Jesus walked, swam in the beautiful Sea of Galilee and intensely studied the life of Christ, explored the magnificent rock structures of Petra in Jordan (including the Treasury made famous by Indiana Jones), retraced many of the apostle Paul's steps along the coast of Turkey, purchased numerous souvenirs by mastering the skills of haggling and counting money in shekels, and took advantage of email, instant messaging, skype, and calling cards. :-)

Sam worked 4 jobs (forensic accounting intern, assistant tennis camp coach/court maintenance guy, basketball ref, and deposition transcript editor).  Sam served as assistant chef and baker for the Powell household.  Sam hung out with his family.  Sam worked out a lot so Elise would still think he looked good when she got home from Jerusalem.  Sam completed a jigsaw puzzle.  Sam played tennis in a rec league and volleyball in a church league.  Sam journeyed to San Francisco with his family for a fun vacation.  Sam also took advantage of email, gchat, skype, and Elise's calling cards.

August~ Elise came home!!! Going to the temple, attending the wedding of my good friend Jessica Moose (now Jackson) in Manti, putting together final wedding preparations for our own wedding!

September~ Sam and I were married and sealed in the Manti LDS temple for time and for all eternity! What a special day that was for us. We also enjoyed spending a few days in Moab exploring the Arches and the river. We bought some nice bikes and love riding them everywhere! We started up another semester at BYU where Sam started the Master of Accountancy program and Elise changed her major to Coaching/Teaching Physical Education. Elise also celebrated her 21st birthday.

October~ welcoming in baby James Powell (our first nephew), carving jack-o-lanterns, decorating caramel apples with Taylor and Jenny, dressing up as pirates for a Halloween party

November~ Heading south (Arizona) for Thanksgiving and enjoying warm weather, good food, and even better company! Welcoming in baby Carson Beckstead (our 2nd nephew), accepting a calling to teach the 5 year-olds in our ward primary.

December~ finishing up another semester of school, going to Colorado for Christmas break, baking lots of treats, Christmas caroling, hiking to a frozen waterfall and relaxing in the hot springs.

Well there you have it, our first full calendar year together.  It was full of fun and adventure and tons of other less interesting stuff that we didn't write about or take pictures of.  We're excited for another year to spend together (especially the fact that we'll have the summer together as well this time).

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
